Rags2Riches – Uplifting Lives through Social Entrepreneurship

For entrepreneur Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, a major turning point in her life was when she was named Young Laureate for the Environment at the prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise in 2010. The award brought international recognition to her efforts to help impoverished women in the Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City through the social enterprise Rags2Riches, a fashion and design house that empowers underprivileged community artisans.

About a year ago, BigBenta launched its Classified Ads service. It was intended to give the local market an alternative to the dominant player as well as build its own presence in the local online market. The market for online classified ads has since intensified among the players, but it has also generated the right interest among the older population, which reinforces the message that Internet will be part of everyone’s life more and more.

Online Store

Around March of 2016, the company launched its online store called “BigBenta Store” where now, close to a hundred merchants have set up their online store and started selling to anyone nationwide. BigBenta Store is the manifestation of the company’s belief and support for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME).

The major difference of BigBenta Store from the competitors is it allows the merchants (Storeowners) to create their own online store based on their preferences like items to sell, its varieties (e.g. color, sizes, etc.), inventory level, pricing, promotion rules, payment method, customer management, report management and many more. The online store will soon be equipped with features like chat, abandoned cart management, customer survey, and complaint management that are all designed to put the storeowners in control of their online store and everything that happens in it.

To complete BigBenta Marketplace, the company officially launched its 3rd platform, BigBenta Service Booking this month. In terms of its full range of offerings, BigBenta Marketplace stands as truly one-of-a-kind having three platforms, built to respond to the needs of Filipino customers and entrepreneurs.
Service Bookings

BigBenta Service Bookings allows any skilled individual (a.k.a. Service Provider or SP) to directly offer their services based on their preferred location, time, work scope and rate charges. Likewise, customers can also specify, browse and choose their preferred service provider using a variety of criteria.  Most services offered are blue collar in nature (e.g. plumbers, electrician, tutors, masseuse, beauticians, etc.) while there are also some professional services available like bookkeeping, accountancy, events management, and others.

BigBentaService Booking was developed to provide additional income to service providers outside their full-time or daytime jobs, while giving them full flexibility based on their available schedule and place of residence. The major difference of BigBenta Service Booking compared to competition is its positioningthat is geared towards individual service providers rather than service companies or agencies. For the customer, this means that prices are lower, service duration is flexible (e.g. hourly, half-day, whole day, per call, etc.), and scope of services is equally varied. For as long as a service provider can do it, he or she can offer it, in her own terms.

BigBentaMarketplace and its entire service portfolio will soon be available on mobile (Android and iOS). To prevent fraud, fake items and persons with character issues from offering their services in BigBenta Store and BigBenta Service Booking, the company implements an authentication and verification (A&V) process to all its storeowners and service providers on an annual basis. Every product item and service being offered including its purchase and booking are screened and verified by BigBenta’s customer support, all done to protect the customers.

Meralco rate for residential customers in May will go down

Meralco has announced that the rate for residential customers in May will go down by 41 centavos per kWh, reducing it to PhP8.444 per kWh.  For a typical household consuming 200 kWh, this translates to a reduction of around PhP82 in their electricity bill.

Philippine Small and Medium Enterprise Business Expo 2015 on its 3rd year

Belief Plus Conviction: Beautiful

One of the people I really admire the most is an example of courage, faith, and passion.  She is always the smart and intelligent among her family. Since her childhood, high expectations never pressured her and instead kept on meeting it.  Starting from elementary up to college, she always had the high grades and awards, but at the middle of her college days, she started to realize that what she really wanted in life she is not getting it from formal education.  Then she kinda lost her way; she jumped from different one course to another, shifting and trying.  People in her family started to put her down and say things about her that she became a failure.

She met a guy who's the same mind like hers, a visionary and a passionate person with the fullness of life.  When they decided to get married, a lot of people discouraged them because according them, they will have no future because both of them didn't graduate from college.  The couple still did it anyway (kulit eh no?) and promised to prove them wrong.  They stick on their belief that people don't need a formal education to live a good life.

After a couple of years, they decided to run a franchise of their family (Anis' family) business.  They took the risk and had the courage to pursue their sound plan.  They tried and failed a lot of times, but having the new-age-knowledge in business and marketing but low in budget for advertising, they started to use the word of mouth strategy (I personally helped ha!) and a couple of social networking sites in promoting their business and thus building a name for their resto business.

Now, all people in Dumaguete or in Silliman University know or have tried eating at their restaurant (neva's pizza dumaguete branch).  They maintained their idea of "client-business-partnership" concept.  They brought exemptional service that topped most of the restos in the town.  They thought of their employees and their customers first because they believe that money will come naturally if you help people.  They did it very well and now they have a good life.
Both of them are college drop-outs, but it didn't matter...the most important thing for them is their dreams.  They have the faith and belief, and they had a strong living a good life and they never stop inspiring me to do more.  In our family (mother side), Ate Dindee is the most successful.
